The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This is the sum of all its leveled up advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader you choose and what type of upgrade you choose to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that need to be altered to upgrade an item.

It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to determine a gating condition when waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at an lower level). The average level of an item is listed on the character sheet.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the potency of gear when choosing to buy or sell. It's a sign of the damage and quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller can be done using the item's level.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its value. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories on how the item level calculation is made. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different worth and gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. The affixes could be used to give the item extra damage, Item Upgrader or add a unique capability to the item (such as reviving dead or item upgrader cutting down the cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.

Currently, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. This will cost a certain amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges similar to other rerolling methods.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However every item will have at least one stat in that range unless they are a unique item or a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that can be modified by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. Like base equipment, it will have to be done per item and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives the player a chance to acquire better gear in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than later ones since most players prefer greater weapon scaling and defense over damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be made or spawn with the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant an additional +40 Luck, or to increase the Luck of an Best item upgrader up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be crafted to increase the damage of any skill that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop or constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The Luck of an item can also influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has a base success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above the items in the inventory. This can block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
